Illustrations for Richard Brautigan’s All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace poetry collection translated from English into Ukrainian

In collaboration with the Drunken Boat Publishing House, this project explores the playful and experimental language of Richard Brautigan through an unexpected artistic approach.

Inspired by Brautigan’s effortless wordplay and surreal comparisons, which seem to preserve the uninhibited consciousness of a child, this project seeks to capture the raw, unpolished essence of creative expression.

Rather than deliberately imitating childlike sketches, the decision was made to draw with the left hand—the untrained, unfamiliar side—where lines emerge naturally uncertain, unrefined, and free of controlled precision. This method allowed for a more authentic visual translation of Brautigan’s poetic spontaneity.

An intriguing discovery added another layer to the project: Brautigan himself was left-handed—a coincidental discovery that further connected the process to the spirit of his writing.
